A potentiometer, often referred to as a pot, is a variable resistor with three terminals. Its main function is to provide a variable voltage or resistance in an electrical circuit. The potentiometer consists of a resistive element and a sliding contact (wiper) that can be moved manually or by an external mechanism. By adjusting the position of the wiper along the resistive element, the potentiometer can control the voltage or resistance in the circuit, making it useful for applications such as volume controls, dimmer switches, and tuning controls in electronic devices.
